FAQs

We regret that we cannot refund or accept returns on YouCake toppers after they have been shipped.

However, if you are a first time user, we do include an extra "practice" sheet for free with your purchase. Please follow the directions that come with your topping or call us at 212-358-7791.

First timer mistakes can include:
- Tearing the frosting sheet from the wax paper backing. This should lift easily, otherwise you could rip the paper

- Using wet hands when holding the frosting sheet, will cause the coloring in the frosting sheet to bleed

- If you open the frosting sheet before your cake is ready and leave it out overnight in a non-sealed bag, will result in the sheet drying out. A dried out sheet SHOULD NOT be applied to a frosted cake

- Ordering the wrong size sheet for your cake. If too small, you can decorate around the sheet, if too large, with attention to your design, you may trim the frosting sheet with a pair of scissors.

For best results:

    • Keep sealed until you have the cake freshly frosted.

    • Remove from backing: Do not try to peel the frosting sheet from the wax paper, instead: Easiest Method: Hold the opposite margin edges of the backing page. Pull the backing page across the sharp edge of table (image facing UP). You actually need to bend the sheet on the corner of the counter as you are pulling it back and forth. This motion will cause the frosting sheet to easily release in the middle. Slide your hand underneath and gently remove from the wax paper backing.Another method is to put the YouCake topping in the freezer for 5-10 minutes or until it just starts to come off the backing easily and the topping will release easily. The amount of time really depends on the temperature of the freezer. If you forget and leave it in until the sheet is rock solid, just leave it out on the counter a few minutes to dethaw a bit before handling or it will crack into pieces.

    • Apply to cake: Lay the frosting sheet on top of the cake from the middle first to the ends. Pat gently to smooth wrinkles.

    • The frosting sheet edges should tuck nicely underneath the border piping. You can also add your border or edge decoration to finish.

      • Let the frosting sheet rest un-refrigerated for at least 30 minutes so that frosting sheets blends with the cake icing. If using store bought icing, let rest for two hours. If you want to apply the topping the day before, just keep refrigerated and let rest 30 minutes before serving. You know it is ready to serve if you can prick the topper with a pin or needle easily.

      • If it is taking a while for the topper to set (it does not pierce easily) use a hair dryer on low and gently wave over the topper. This works especially well on frozen cakes.

      • Then, serve, the frosting sheet is entirely edible. Enjoy!

Once an order has been reviewed, approved, and payment made, YouCake will not refund an order.

For toppers it is best to allow a week so that there is time to review and make changes to the design. We do get a lot of requests to take "strangers" out of a photo, which takes a bit of time.  Though, we are very understanding of party planning and sensitive to potential party calamities and, certainly, we can turn around a topping in a day.

A favorite is the wedding YouCake; the wedding took place on Saturday Oct. 3, the cake photos did not get selected until Thursday, Oct 8 the following week, the toppingwas designed and in the bakeries hands by Oct. 9, in time for the wedding reception cake for Saturday Oct. 10.

For cookies we require at least a five day advance notice. This does not include shipping time. Cookies cannot be packaged until thoroughly dry.

Following are some commonly request YouCake FAQ's:

1. What are the ingredients? Water, Cornstarch, Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup Solids, Cellulose, Sorbitol, Glycerine, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Arabic Gum, Polysorbate 80, Vanilla, Titanium Dioxide, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate.Sugar, Food Coloring (edible ink). The Frosting Sheets add 0 additional calories to your cake.

2. Can I put it on a cheesecake? No, you need a frosted cake – butter-cream is most recommended. If you use frosting that is moist and is whipped cream based you must keep refrigerated so that the frosting stays solid and does not cause the edible ink to run.

3. Will it work on ice cream cakes? Yes! My personal favorite, please follow the ice cream cake instructions and keep in freezer.

4. Can I place a YouCake topper on a store bought cake? Whether ice cream or in store bakery, typically the cakes are set up so the center area is blank. You can either order your frosting sheet to go from edge to edge (and wipe off piping) put the topper down and put some of your own piping down OR order the topping a little smaller, so you can just put it down in the center of the cake.

5. For homemade cakes – try to frost the cake so that it is as even as possible so that the frosting sheet lays flat and there are no air bubbles. It is also suggested to leave enough icing, to pipe around the sides to make a seal. Bakery cakes have very flat cakes, but home bakers may not make a flat enough cake – piping will help seal the image and make it look pretty.

6. Can I use store icing? Yes, any store brand icing will work, the icing can be flavored icing like a lemon or vanilla, but it has to be white icing. Chocolate icing can go around topper, but not under. Don’t use icing with sprinkles inside (you can put your own sprinkles on after).

7. How long must the frosting sheet be on before I can serve it? This really depends on the type of icing that you use. Butter cream icing will take 30 minutes, for store bought icing which is a bit drier, it is best to let the cake rest with the YouCake topping for several hours. I usually leave the cake out with toping for about 30 minutes and then place in the fridge. Ice cream cakes can go back in freezer for an hour and then be defrosted according to the manufacturers’ directions. If it is a hot day, keep the cake cool. Be careful with ice cream cakes.

8. Can I apply the topper with wet hands? No, your hands should be dry – the ink will run if your hands are wet!

9. How long will the YouCake topper stay fresh? If kept in its sealed plastic bag, the YouCake should stay fresh for 10 days – do not put in freezer or fridge—moisture will spoil it. If you take it out of the bag, you can reseal it. You will know when the frosting sheet has expired because it will dry out. It is still edible, but not very tasty.

10. What’s the best way to remove the topper from the frosting sheet?
1. Take out of the sealed bag
2. Pick up frosting sheet
3. Kind of work the topper face UP back and forth on edge of counter (like you would work a towel back and forth.) As you are rubbing back and forth you will see the topper separate from the wax paper. At this point, the topper peels off easily from the area that has lifted. Once removed from paper baking, lay flat on cake from the center and smoothing out to the corners. If you are first time YouCake user, we include two toppers with every YouCake order – in case you need to start over or want to practice!

11. Are the Frosting Sheets Kosher? Yes – here is the link to the Kosher certification -- info@youcake.com

1. What we found is that not all bakeries had a large format edible printer, only 8 1/2 x 11 (which is sad on a half or full sheet cake). We can create any size or shape (up to 11 x 17 inches).

2. The colors were not exact on the toppings printed by the bakeries. YouCake staff has over ten years in the web, print, and graphic industry, so we know about color correction and calibration as well as working with corporate logos and licensed images. In fact, many bakers we have worked with prefer if we send the topping so they can focus on the cake.

3. Very few bakeries had the capability to receive a file to print by email or the web, or to even take a cd or dvd (many will only accept a printed photo which they will scan for you) YouCake provides graphic embellishment, personalization and attention to photo quality.

4. With YouCake you can use more than one photo--you can have as many as you like--and you can really personalize your YouCake using the latest graphic programs available--supermarkets will not do any graphic work for you. We add color, flourish, inscriptions, and themes. We use real graphic tools to make your YouCake beautiful.

5. And, the mother of one of YouCake founders like to bake her own cake--she is a Duncan Hines baker--and still wanted a YouCake for her parties. With a YouCake topping, home bakers can have a YouCake for her their parties too.
